Adapted Inventory of Virtues and Strengths (AIVS)

Following the introduction of a theoretical model (the V-PAM), an outcome measure, Adapted Inventory of Virtues and Strengths (AIVS), was constructed. To operationalize each of the V-PAM constructs, a positive psychology perspective was adopted. One of the contributions of positive psychology concerning virtue study was the theoretical articulation of what differentiates constructs of value, virtue, and character. As noted above, values are what people believe to be important, while virtue denotes values in action in their daily activities. Character development is enhanced by continued engagement with one’s values. Thus, character is a behavioral manifestation of virtue that becomes a part of one’s identity and guides one’s actions and decisions in multiple contexts. Given below is a link to the AIVS test. Upon the completion of this assessment, a brief report on your character profile, associated with five virtues, is provided.

The Adapted Virtues and Character Strengths Scale is a 46-item measure of the respondent's selfperception on their character traits relevant to five V-PAM virtues (i.e., courage, integrity, practical wisdom, committed action and emotional transcendence). The scale provides five virtue subscale scores and that gauge individual’s virtue profile and total scores that represents a single virtue score. A researcher may use these scores selectively depending on the nature of their study.

Translations of the AIVS into two languages (English & Korean) are available. Feel free to translate the AIVS into other languages. However, we would appreciate it if you could send us a copy of the translation so we can update this list.
